I chose UNSW because I was really drawn to the flexibility of UNSW programs, their international outlook and global opportunities, friendly and lively campus, and the degree of their support behind our individual aspirations. The fact that I was automatically offered the Scientia Scholarship also significantly assisted my university choice, as it not only provided substantial financial support, but also helped me to network with other talented students across faculties and interact with notable academics.
I love how relevant Architecture is to the everyday – everywhere I go I am drawn to studying the nature of the built environment and what it says about human culture and identity. The degree extends into various fields of knowledge so that students are not only challenged in areas of design, drawing and modelling, but also history, theory, sustainability and construction. We learn how to achieve creative flair within functional restraints, how to speak of the larger world whilst representing a smaller community, and to form spaces which are enjoyable, inspirational and memorable to occupants.
The credibility of UNSW programs, scholarships and extra-curricular activities made it possible for me to gain an architectural internship with Zhinar in the summer holidays of my first year of study. Just by being in the office I gained valuable insights into the nature of my future profession, such as the essential task of collaboration between architects and engineers, builders, council consultations and clients. My own understanding of design grew through observation of their professional projects and access to their resources such as a material library and Architectural publications. I was also able to further hone my skills in communication, graphic presentation and computer programs such as CAD.
Truthfully, UNSW students are extremely friendly! I found it easy to interact with everyone I met within my course and the broad backgrounds of students quickly expanded my own appreciation of rich, diverse communities. The wide variety of UNSW clubs also meant that there was an association for many of my interests – whether it be martial arts, humanitarian causes or movie nights! – and it was fantastic to meet other talented, passionate students from all over the uni.
When researching UNSW I often visited the UNSW International website as I was extremely interested in global exchange opportunities. I was determined to discover at an early stage the conditions involved so that I could structure my study plan and extra-curricular aspirations around the possibility of future international experiences. I am preparing to go on exchange during my Masters, in two years time!
